Debut Screening of Bayard Stern's "Voices of Patriotism"

Submitted by tnjp on September 25, 2007 - 4:16pm.

“VOICES OF PATRIOTISM” DOCUMENTARY

I would like to invite everyone to attend the debut screening of Bayard Stern’s “Voices of Patriotism” to be held October 5th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 249 of the Fine Arts Building at FSU. (see attached) This is a short film that Bayard made for a film class at FSU that documented the luminary protest at Lake Ella in March organized by the local grassroots group, “Tallahasseeans Who Believe It’s Time To Come Home”. Soon after the luminary event, Julian McMackin Woodall, a Marine stationed in Iraq, was killed. Julian was the son of one of our friends and luminary participant, Meredith McMackin. In this final version of the film, Bayard has added footage of Julian’s funeral...

You can view TNJP's pictorial essay of the luminary event here...

There will be refreshments and information available about local peace groups. For more information, contact Su Ecenia at secenia(at)comcast.net (repalce (at) with @).

Voices of Patriotism Screening Was Standing Room Only

Submitted by tnjp on October 15, 2007 - 4:15am.

It was standing room only for the screening of Voices of Patriotism. Well over a hundred folks showed up for the wine and cheese before the brief talks by Bayard and Meredith McMackin preceding the showing.... the added footage of Julian Woodhall's funeral and speech by his mom, Meredith McMackin, added an a gut punch to the short film.
BTW, here's a "preview" from the Tally Dem by Hinson....

'Voices': All war is local By Mark Hinson

The war in Iraq hits home hard in Florida State graduate student Bayard Stern's moving mini-documentary "Voices of Patriotism."

Stern, a Tallahassee native, began his "Voices" project in March as a documentation of the luminaria project at Lake Ella. More than 3,400 candles bearing the names and ages of America's dead were arranged along the shore as a visual reminder of the war's toll.

Along the way, Stern met Meredith McMackin, an anti-war mom whose son Julian Woodall was fighting with the Marines in Iraq. Woodall, 21, was killed in combat in May and that changed everything - personal lives, the film, you name it.

"Voices" offers several different views of the war (including some from Tallahassee Democrat writer, author and Iraq veteran John Crawford), but the most powerful one arrives in the speech McMackin reads at her son's funeral.

"Voices of Patriotism," which runs less than 15 minutes, will be screened between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. during a presentation and talk today in Room 249 of the Florida State Fine Arts Building, corner of Copeland and Call streets. The room is located next to the FSU Museum of Fine Arts. It's free.
