TNJP meets with Congressman Boyd On Monday, April 28, 2003 the Tallahassee Network for Justice and Peace (www.tnjp.org) met with Congressman Allen Boyd and petitioned him for redress of grievances. We discussed three closely related issues and requested specific actions from him to remedy the grievances. The first was to protect civil liberties threatened by the "war on terrorism". The Patriot Act I places an unacceptable burden on the civil rights and liberties of the American people and we asked Boyd to forcibly speak out, calling for the repeal of the Patriot Act I and to stop the Patriot Act II. The second was to return the war making power to Congress. We do not want Executive branch preemptive wars with Syria, North Korea, Iran or other countries. We asked Boyd to forcibly speak out and to co-sponsor HCON 102 expressing the sense of Congress that Congress has the sole and exclusive power to declare war. The third was that there be no occupation of Iraq. We do not want an oil colony. We did not accept the justifications for the war, the shock and awe bombing campaign or the use of cluster bombs and depleted uranium. We asked Boyd to forcibly speak out demanding that Iraq be turned over to the UN with the funding necessary to rebuild it as a sovereign independent nation. Follow up contacts with Congressman Boyd on these and other issues are needed since he has returned to "inside the beltway" and needs to hear from us. Thanks, Jeff Bastian
