Tallahassee CodePink Reads the
Names of Florida's War Dead
On Jan. 1st, 2006 Tallahassee CodePINK read the names of
Florida's War Dead in front of the Old Capital on Monroe St.
Report from Lydia...
This
was a good day. A long day. I called a ton of people and
put an ad in the paper for people to read the names of the fallen for
20 minutes. About 30 different people floated thru. It took
over 7 hours, one name at a time and we ended reading in chorus to
finish up. It was winter and a bit cold - note the gloves :-D
Dave
and I were trying so hard to get CODEPINK tally women to come and join
us. This was in solidarity with a National CP action - so Dave
and I set it up.
That was the first time we did the
ribbons (Jacque Betz called from Gainesville acting like a friggin
maniac about me calling them peace ribbons. We had never
met and I thought she was nuts. She has the Peace Ribbon
Project. Anyway, we're buds now).
Tom likes to get it over
faster by reading in chorus but this day was truly one of our favorites
. To be there an entire day and still not be able to read all of
the names. I think it would take over 11 hours to read them now
(we used name, age, and rank). It was very moving and
bonding.
I'd love to do an all day thing like this when
we get to the 4,000 soldiers dead mark. How about the STOP The
Next WAR Now! banner. Isn't it the best.
